UPDATED: 2:11 pm EDT September 16, 2008

WTAE Channel 4 is now broadcasting all newscasts in stunning high definition.

Channel 4 Action News now boasts HD studio cameras and state-of-the art HD graphics equipment. The same revolutionary real-time 3D graphic system used by major networks such as CNN and ESPN. Weather Watch 4 meteorologists will now utilize HD radar images and weather graphics. “High definition gives us the ability to give our viewers a clearer, sharper look at the weather that affects Western Pennsylvania. We’re excited to take our weather forecasting to a whole new level,” says WTAE General Manager Rick Henry. Traffic Watch 4’s 3D traffic animations are also upgraded to HD.

WTAE Channel 4 was Pittsburgh’s first television station to broadcast HD programming in 1999. Last year, the station debuted a dynamic HD ready news set.

“In order to ensure a smooth HD transition on-air and behind the scenes, we’ve elected to proceed in phases. We will begin outfitting our news crews in the field with 16 x 9 digital cameras in the next phase,” said WTAE Chief Engineer Dave Kasperek.

In addition to Channel 4 Action News, WTAE also broadcasts HD programming such as: Oprah, GMA, World News With Charles Gibson, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, Lost and Dancing With The Stars. High definition episodes of Entertainment Tonight will begin airing in a matter of weeks.

High definition programming from WTAE Channel 4 can be seen on Comcast channel 210, Armstrong Channel 104, DirectTV Channel 4, Dish Network Channel 6477 and over the air on 4-1.

WTAE-TV Channel 4, the ABC station in Pittsburgh, is owned by Hearst-Argyle Television. Hearst-Argyle owns 26 television stations, and manages an additional three television and two radio stations, in geographically diverse U.S. markets.
